Marcus Garvey (1887 - 1940)
 CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER

Jamaican civil rights leader Marcus Garvey was the first person to advance the political consciousness of the African diaspora on a global scale. Garvey's philosophy emphasized black empowerment through economic, political, and social freedom. His doctrine of self-sufficiency and call to “Stand tall!” and “Unite!” helped to psychologically liberate the minds of generations.
