Eddie Mabo (1936 - 1992)

HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE

 

Eddie Koiki Mabo was an Indigenous Torres Straight Islander who fought for Aboriginal land rights in Australia. In 1993, he won his 10-year legal battle in a landmark decision against colonialism which finally recognized land claims for Indigenous people.

 

This piece was made for an auction in Toronto as part of a 2020 fundraiser for Australian bushfire relief. The event raised money for firefighters & wildlife rescue.
